My friends surname is Boulton, he has 2 chinese symbols on his arm, one is for bowl and one is for ton, yeah we still take the piss out of him for that.

I'm dying! This is so funny!! For two reasons: 1) I've studied Japanese and I can't believe how badly some of these turned out. 2) When I was dumb and stupid and didn't know Japanese yet (over a decade ago) I decided to get a phoenix with "Life" written in Kanji on top. The ink bled so badly since it was done poorly. I have a Korean friend who told me that it now looks like "Vinegar."

So some of them that say things like, "Only Today" are probably intentional. I think they are probably inspirational things (at least the first one) and is very common to write as a tattoo in English too. Also things like "Agony" and "Lost" are (unfortunately) probably intentional as well. People tend to write phrases that mean something to them or are powerful to them as tattoos.
HOWEVER, since I've studied Japanese I know that many things in English don't directly translate and visa versa! So "Only Today" might be odd as a literal translation in Japanese. You might have more of a phrase to describe the feeling that the person is trying to portray.
Still entertaining! I appreciate how your honest feedback on some of them! I certainly would not write some of those things on myself in ANY language!! LOL

I have about 5 tattoos but i avoid, words or names, i love the character style in japanese language but permantly put on my body and run the risk of wrong phrase it be embarressing.
