Dragonfly Tattoo Designs
The dragonfly tattoo is not hugely popular but has caught the eye of many people, especially those who noticed that Heath Ledger wore one. There are many variations on this tattoo and in this article, I’ll explain to you the meaning of these tattoos and tell you about five different dragonfly tattoo designs that you’ll want to choose from for your next tattoo.
Dragonfly Tattoo Meaning
Dragonflies are beautiful creatures, and some women consider them an alternative to getting a butterfly tattoo. However, they are much more than that. These are hardy and incredibly quick insects. They hover where they like, oblivious to what is around them because, for the most part, they have nothing to worry about.
Dragonflies are also usually only seen in hotter climes, and there is considered to be something exotic about this creature. When it is seen in colder parts, it often comes as a bit of a surprise which adds to the intrigue about this insect.
Dragonfly Tattoos On Wrist
This is a popular type of dragonfly tattoo design and is usually worn on the inside of the wrist. This way, if you don’t want to reveal it, then it is relatively easy to conceal.
Tribal Dragonfly Tattoo
Dragonflies make for good subjects for tribal tattoos because they are symmetrical to start with. As most dragonfly style tattoos are relatively small, this will demand some very intricate work from your artist to draw all the lines correctly.
An alternative is to have a much larger tattoo than usual. This can then be inked onto your chest, midriff, back or lower back.
Dragonfly Tattoos On The Foot
This is very popular with women. The tattoo is usually placed on the top of the foot, close to the outer edge. A tribal design here would be difficult to achieve. You are better off with something smaller and yet multi-coloured.
Small Dragonfly Tattoos
Most tattoos of this type are small, but you can go smaller still and have a tattoo that is little more than two colours with a few lines drawn to represent the wings and the segmented body of the insect. This design can then be placed inconspicuously, such as behind the ear. This also works well on the fingers.
Dragonfly Tattoo On Hip
The dragonfly is not really suited to this location. It has an elongated body like all insects, but the wings tend to get in the way. This is similar to angel wing tattoos.
They are better suited to the lower back, the unfortunately named “tramp stamp” area. Here they can look excellent, whether tribal or non-tribal.
